John Habberton AUTHOR

John Habberton

ohn Habberton (1842 – 1921) was a journalist and writer. He worked as a literary and drama critic for the New York Herald for 20 years, but became more widely known through Romance of California Life, a book of stories about early life in California, which was published in 1880.

Helen’s Babies, a book that continues to delight readers today and is still very relevant, was first published in 1876 by Loring, Boston.
Whereas Romance of California Life was published under Habberton’s real name, Helen’s Babies was said to have been written by “their latest victim”. Habberton continued to write stories under various pseudonyms (including “Smelfungus”) for years, and was only acknowledged as the author of Helen’s Babies in the 1903 edition.

Helen’s Babies earned John Habberton great literary acclaim, and he was mentioned alongside great writers like Rudyard Kipling and Mark Twain. The book became as much of a classic as The Wind in the Willows and Winnie the Pooh and was translated into a great many languages. The sequel, entitled Other People’s Children, met with similar success.

Helen's Babies

Harry Burton, a New York salesman and bachelor, is invited to spend his vacation at his sister Helen’s house in idyllic Hillcrest, in Spring Valley, New York. There, she promises, he will be able to unwind and find time to pursue his hobby: reading.

The only condition is that he must spend some time with his dear little nephews, who have a housemaid and a nanny to look after them the rest of the time. Harry is delighted. But, as the amused reader soon discovers, life with Bob and Teddy – two extremely inquisitive and stubborn young lads – proves a little difficult, and threatens to become a real struggle...

Although his vacation does not go as planned and is not always trouble-free, Harry Burton is eventually reconciled with the two young imps, who are ultimately instrumental in securing his personal happiness.
